Waves have moved energy around the globe since the earth was formed. But
humans have yet to harness them at a reasonable cost and at scale. So the
innovations keep coming. One of the most promising is Neptune Wave Power.

Neptune Wave Power, based in Texas, has developed and patented a technology
that can efficiently convert the wave motion imparted on a buoy into a
rotational motion that drives a generator to produce electricity.
Neptune’s patent for a computer controlled horizontal rotating pendulum
provides us with a significant advantage over the competition. It is their
patented system that allows Neptune to optimize the conversion of wave
motion to electricity. (If the idea of a “horizontal rotating pendulum
gives you pause, just think of a self-winding watch. It’s the same idea.)

Neptune Wave Power's technology is a “point absorber” Wave Energy
Conversion Device (‘WECD’). The floating and securely moored offshore buoy
reacts to the vertical surge and irregular movement of waves causing a
horizontal pendulum within it to rotate. The rotational energy of this
pendulum is directed to an on board electric generator. Power generated is
fed to the utility grid via an underwater cable system at an interconnect
point. Neptune Wave Power's WECD patented designs have numerous advantages:

· * No moving parts exposed to seawater

· * Design that uses proven electrical, mechanical, mooring, and
drive components

· * Modular design for cost effective manufacturing

· * Interchangeable components for cost effective maintenance

· * Scalable and movable

· * Dynamically configurable for any offshore environment

The company’s WECDs are deployed in arrays and are fully scalable to meet
the demands of a variety of applications. There are no emissions, no fuel
costs, and low maintenance and monitoring costs. The electricity costs
generated with this technology are competitive with any alternative
generation method including wind. Design, construction, and deployment
times are also dramatically less than with other alternative energy
technologies due to our simple single point mooring system and approach to
manufacturing. A Neptune array can be deployed and operational in less
then 6 months.

Neptune has completed a test program culminating in the construction of
Buoy 3.1, continuing the evolution and refinement of the technology.

Model 3.1 is the first fully functional demonstration of this technology
which combines the features of mass-production design elements with full
dynamic optimization capabilities. The system underwent extensive sea
trials during late 2013 off the New Hampshire coast. During that time, the
3-meter, 3-ton system was exposed to several gale-force storms and waves
exceeding 20 feet in height. The tests demonstrated the seaworthiness of
the design and power generation within the expected range. In addition, the
tests collected valuable data to help engineers refine the design and begin
designing much larger versions of the system.

Neptune Wave Power is now moving to a full scale commercial program with
the first buoys being deployed in the Bahamas for certification of
operation connected to a utility grid. The 20 month program will deploy two
buoys grid connected.

Neptune’s current cost to deploy buoy arrays offshore is in line with
offshore wind turbines, but without the visual impact nor the construction
complications of building the large towers in the ocean. With the maturity
of the technology, Neptune expects to deliver electricity to the grid at a
price that is less then offshore wind. The projected installed cost is
$3,000/kw.

Neptune’s business plan is to develop research, engineering and logistics
capabilities in house. It will develop worldwide contract manufacturing
relationships for the fabrication and delivery of their product to project
sites for the periodic maintenance.

One important aspect of the technology is its ease of periodic maintenance.
Typical wave generators have to be disconnected and wrestled to shore for
maintenance. But Neptune is designed so that the central core—the
waterproof container that houses all of the electronics and mechanics—can
be disconnected from the donut-shaped buoy around it, taken to shore and
maintained.

*Terence Waldron, PE*, is the President and founder of Waldron Engineering
& Construction, and board member of Neptune Wave Power. In 1992, along
with the other members of the founding team who are still at the company
today, he formed Waldron Engineering, Inc. Mr. Waldron quickly built a
reputation providing best-in-class consulting and engineering services to
the fast-growing merchant power industry. This laid the foundation for a
broader array of services to eventually include the design of energy
generation and distribution infrastructure tailored to the specific needs
of a diverse client base. Prior to starting Waldron Engineering, he
started his career with Stone and Webster working in the nuclear industry.
Foreseeing the decline in the nuclear marketplace, he changed his focus to
the industrial side of the power industry with a specialization in combined
heat and power plants.

In 1998, Mr. Waldron added another dimension to Waldron’s capabilities with
the formation of Waldron Construction, LLC. The addition of equipment
procurement and construction management services enabled Waldron to provide
complete turnkey project solutions to its clients. In 2005, the two
entities combined to form Waldron Engineering & Construction, Inc. This
move allowed Waldron to provide a single point of contact for its entire
array of services.

To date, Mr. Waldron and the Waldron team have successfully executed over
650 projects for over 200 clients. Waldron’s multi-disciplinary team
provides expertise through all phases of energy generation and distribution
projects, from conceptual phase studies and design to final commissioning
and testing. But, he is most passionate about developing ideas for new
energy technologies – some of which will soon come to fruition.

Mr. Waldron has a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering Mechanics from
Columbia University's Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied
Sciences and is an active member of the American Society of Mechanical
Engineers. When not offering solutions to clients, he spends time with his
wife and five children, enjoys running, rowing, biking and devouring
historical novels.
