Apogee Power USA Inc.: Lithium Ion Batteries with More Power and No Thermal
Run-a-Way

Apogee Power USA Inc. has achieved one of the goals of all lithium ion
battery makers: no thermal run-a-way potential. That means no fires, which
have plagued this battery technology since its early days. Largely because
of that, Apogee’s Li Ion batteries appear to be very near to UL 1973
approval. It has done so using an integral chip set and an advanced Battery
Management System (BMS).

The company is also pending approval as a primary supplier for the
Department of Defense, the largest battery user there is. In addition to
their batteries’ safety features, their integrated ultra-capacitor means
that their system can provide the extra burst of stored energy that is
required to recharge the battery.

Apogee Power specializes in the selection, custom design and manufacturing
of various DARPA funded and developed ultra-capacitors. Apogee Li-ion
batteries ranging from low power high energy, high power low energy and
very high pulse power applications. By 2010, Apogee Power had successfully
developed an intrinsically safe Li-ion battery pack for mine communication.
The Li-ion power pack was the first to get the approval by the Mine Safety
and Health Administration. The company also succeeded in developing a very
high pulse power Li-ion power pack for Genset UPS engine starter for the
replacement of the Pb-acid battery. That was certified by Consumer
Electronics in 2012. (Consumer Electronics is the Asian and Euro standard
for battery safety. Practically all laptop and cell phone batteries have
this rating.)

To design an intrinsically safe Li-ion power pack, the company developed
both their proprietary BMS and short circuit prevention. Also, a
sophisticated chip-set design was added for the prevention of overcharge.
On top of all of this safety precaution, remote access option via
the internet or cell network allows customers to check our battery health
and safety assets remotely.

Apogee’s chief scientist is Dr. K.C. Tsai, who founded the company in
Silicon Valley several decades ago. Before 1973, Dr. Tsai, who attended the
U of Texas, was widely regarded as one of the greatest battery chemists in
the world. For a while, he was employed by Elon Musk.

The company’s line of lithium ion and hybrid battery storage systems is
targeted to a wide range of applications:

· Nano Grids

· Micro Grids

· Solar-Powered Grids

· Wind-Powered Grids

· Distributed Generation

· Military Systems

· Robotics and Automation

· Transportation—including unmanned vessels, unmanned vehicles,
drones, electric trains and electric vehicles

· Coal and nuclear plant storage replacement

· High pulse power for starting back-up generators.

Apogee has achieved another breakthrough with lead acid batteries. By
combining their Lithium-Ion technology with their ultra-capacitors, the
company has been able to extend the life of lead acid batteries to almost
nine years and expects to hit the 10 year mark with ease. They do so by
keeping the voltage high with lithium ion batteries, and when it does drop
below a threshold, the ultra-capacitor jumps in and charges the battery.

So sure is the company of achieving that 10 year mark, they warranty the
Hybrid batteries for that period of time. Moreover, is will be backed by a
warranty from a major insurance company in China (Ping An)—the same one
that purchased the Waldorf Astoria for $2 billion in cash some years ago.

Apogee recently received investment paper work from a Venture Capitalist,
but is still raising funds to accelerate its expansion into new markets.

Howard Chalfin is a clean tech entrepreneur currently focusing on energy
storage. His company Efficient Energy Systems advises companies on lithium
ion battery storage strategies to go to market and he is running business
development for QCoefficient, an innovative software package that uses the
thermal storage in the building mass to load shift and through chiller
maximization load shed during the summer months of peak afternoon demand.
He worked on Wall Street for 18 years before transitioning to clean
technology. He lives and works in NYC.

Michael Harper is currently the CEO of Apogee Power USA Inc. for nearly 3
years. He is a decorated and Honorably Discharged U.S. Marine Corps Veteran
having served in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba among several other duty stations.
Having worked in the IT industry for 19 years (Nortel, Bay Networks, Lever,
AT&T) he ventured into selling IT to the federal government. A major award
at the Department Of Energy moved Mr. Harper into the new market of clean
energy and in particular lithium ion battery storage.
