Panel Focus: Trends in CSR and sustainability reporting as a way to help companies address environmental, social and governance issues – achieving both impact and performance.

According to the Governance & Accountability Institute, Inc.,<https://www.ga-institute.com/press-releases/article/flash-report-85-of-sp-500-indexR-companies-publish-sustainability-reports-in-2017.html> “’Sustainability reporting’ rose dramatically from 2011, when roughly 20% of companies published reports, to 72% just three years later in 2013. From 2013 to 2017, the frequency of reporting has increased each year, now up to 85% of companies reporting in 2017.” There are 1700+ signatories to the Principles for Responsible Investment<https://fsa.sasb.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/PRI-SASB-Webinar-27June2017_noOTPP.pdf>, with $70 trillion assets under management – 89% of the world’s top 100 asset manager are signatories, and 304 signatories are asset owners representing $16.6 trillion in assets.

As companies strive to protect their reputational assets and earn trust from stakeholders, sustainability reporting and disclosure are no longer reserved solely for “green” or mission-oriented companies. Demand for transparency and disclosure is increasing, and sustainability reporting is becoming mainstream. However, how reporting is done may vary depending on the target audience and purpose of those disclosures. Dominant frameworks such as GRI and SASB, and emerging methods such as Reporting 3.0, Trucost, and <IR>, are evolving to play different parts and complement each other. Our expert panel will discuss best practices employed by companies, and how such practices create value for shareholders and stakeholders. While sustainability reporting remains largely voluntary, our panel will explore legal trends and any potential movement to integrate sustainability and financial disclosures, from a US and global perspective.
