*About the school:*

The Roberts Field School is a small, independent elementary school located
in Park Slope, Brooklyn, offering children a progressive and holistic
approach to rich and invigorating academics. The nexus of the Roberts Field
curricular program is an interdisciplinary approach in which each thematic
unit of study is woven throughout all areas of learning and creative
processes. Our schooling experience is centered upon the unification of
academics, creativity, and nature.

Each class at Roberts Field is a small, blended-grade community of
approximately 14–18 students who are co-taught by two lead teachers. Across
the week, students participate in ancillary programming with additional
educators in areas such as music, arts, and STEM. A central pillar of our
enrichment offerings is our Day in the Field—a weekly outdoor education
experience for students in grades 1–3. Modeled after the Swiss Forest
School, our Day in the Field is deeply rooted in nature and creativity and
grounded in concepts of Physical, Life, and Earth Sciences.

Across all aspects of our programming, we are committed to offering a
highly differentiated, enriching, and engaging experience for all students
across a broad range of passions and ability levels.

*About the position:*

>From week to week, Day in the Field is typically based in the great expanse
of nearby Prospect Park. Places such as Central Park, the Highline, and the
Gowanus Canal can also offer tremendous opportunities for diverse
experiences and environments for learning. Each of these spaces provide
fertile ground for science-based lessons which often tie in classroom units
of study. Beyond this content, there are opportunities for volunteering and
connecting to the community in the spirit of Roberts Field.

We are seeking a part-time Outdoor Nature & Science Educator for the
2019-2020 school year to sculpt and lead our Day in the Field program as
the Lead Field Instructor one morning a week for approximately 25 students
in grades 1–3. This teacher is responsible for developing units of study,
lesson plans, and hands-on experiences that are rooted in our guiding
materials, field practice and philosophy, and our mission.

For the Day in the Field, classroom teachers accompany the Lead Field
Instructor in facilitating activities alongside students for the duration
of the Field experience. The Lead Field Instructor plans and guides the
experience for the whole group but collaborates with the teaching team to
delegate components such as arts, philosophy, and small group exploratory
activities to augment and diversify the 4-hour outdoor experience. Please
note this programming is all-weather, with the exception of extreme cold or
wind, or electrical storms.

In total, this position requires a time commitment of approximately 6 hours
per week.

Our ideal candidate has robust experience teaching, a deep knowledge and
love of the outdoors, a commitment to collaboration, and a strong interest
in integration of arts, sciences, and nature.

*Responsibilities:*

   - Plan and facilitate weekly 4-hour Day in the Field outdoor education
experience for students in grades 1–3.
   - Collaborate with the teaching team to delegate components (such as
arts, philosophy, and small group exploratory activities) to augment and
diversify the 4-hour Day in Field experience.
   - Establish and manage classroom social-emotional and behavioral
   expectations.
   - Collaborate with classroom co-teaching team to ensure units of study,
lesson plans, and activities align with interdisciplinary units of study in
   the classroom.
   - Prepare and maintain materials for students and teachers for Day in
   the Field each week.

*Experience and Mindset:*

   - Knowledge and love of nature and outdoors
   - Experience teaching Outdoor Education
   - Commitment to collaborative team planning
   - Interest and experience in teaching interdisciplinary curricula
   - Skill and proficiency in social-emotional and behavioral management
   - Dedication to providing differentiated, enriching, and engaging
experience for all students across a broad range of levels
   - Self-reflective and open to support and feedback from learning
   specialists and directors
   - Bachelors and/or Masters Degree in Education, Teaching Certification
   preferred

All applicants must be great communicators, team players, and be inspired
by working within a holistically-minded program. Our small and close
leadership team is consistently involved with the life of the program and
classroom, as well as the lives and development of the families and
students, as pertains to the student growth and well-being in the classroom.
