Hailing a Farmer

As we cruised through Prospect Heights, the driver, a man in his forties,
and I chatted. We talked about the city's nerve-wracking economic outlook
and the pathetic timing of the MTA fare hike.  After some commiseration, we
switched to a more pleasant topic, the arrival of spring.

The driver asked me what I did for a living. I told him about our work at

what I am doing next. I want to raise chickens again."
The cabbie's name was Efrim Soria. When Efrim was growing up in Cuenca,
Ecuador, his mother raised chickens to sell meat and eggs at the city's
open-air markets. He remembers waking before dawn to feed the animals,
racing with his brothers to see who would finish their chores first, and
smelling fresh eggs frying on the stove.  Today, having spent the last 14
years as a New Yorker, Efrim is ready for a change.
