I want to alert you all to a new website, ClimateChangeEcon.net, intended to serve as a clearinghouse
for data collection, analysis, policy proposals and information dissemination
about the economic, social and environmental consequences of climate change for
human well-being.
In the US
today, policymakers trying to find the way out of long-term economic crisis
need to understand that tackling our carbon-intensive way of life can create
real economic opportunities. Energy efficiency investments in existing buildings, for example, can create jobs in the exceptionally depressed construction industry and lower energy costs for property owners while generating the cash flow for debt service on borrowed capital from a portion of the cost-savings generated by the structural retrofits.
This resource reflects a long-term commitment to
provide legislators and advocates with a dynamic forum for accessing and
utilizing the emerging, and often interdisciplinary, research on the
intersection of economic and climate change policy.
The website is the result of an international collaboration involving
academic experts, state legislator groups and environmental community groups. The
resources to which the site links have been reviewed, are abstracted, and are
described in terms of their policy and geographic focus, their accessibility and
their sponsorship or orientation.
We welcome the participation of others, and invite you to post links to your
websites in the Web Resources section, to provide lin
ks to materials you have
available on-line in the Climate Change Library, and, where appropriate, to
list your credentials and availability in the Directory of Consultants
ClimateChangeEcon.net also provides a series of primers for legislators unfamiliar
with economic basics or seeking preparation for meetings with economic
witnesses and advisors. We welcome guest authors. Legislators also will be able
to swap information and share best practices from their communities with
colleagues in other regions in a secure Legislators’ Forum to open later this
month..
The website is now live at www.climatechangeecon.net.
The E.P. Systems Group, Inc.
is an economic and environmental planning, policy development and analysis firm
based in Kentucky.
The firm’s domestic and international projects focus on sustainable development
by examining the economic, social and environmental consequences of ecosystem
and climate change along with possible ameliorative private and public policy
solutions.
