Description: Many designers say they are practicing "integrative design",
but are they?
In spite of 15 years of recognition by architects and others that working
with the whole team early in the process is the key to achieving the optimal
sustainable design outcome, most projects continue to be carried out, for
the most part, in a conventional, linear fashion.
This is your chance to really make the leap:
...to develop a practical understanding and methodology of focused,
intentional, and integrated systems thinking
...in a way that opens up new possibilities of deepening the effectiveness
of our green development and construction practices
...so that we become more whole and integrated ourselves and bring that
wholeness to the planet.
What is Integrative Design?
Integrative design is distinguished from conventional design by its use of a
highly collaborative, multidisciplinary project team. It is not the
sequential, relay-race model by which most buildings are designed today. In
an integrative process, on the other hand, the team works as a collective to
understand and develop all aspects of the design.
The design can then emerge organically, with the full benefit of each
expert's input. The structural and mechanical engineers, the landscape
architect and civil engineer, the interior designer, the contractor, the
cost estimator - as a whole group - contribute to the elegance and
effectiveness of the project, inform choices that enhance energy efficiency
and comfort, optimize the siting and orientation, improve the indoor spaces,
enhance the constructability of the resulting design, and address the
budget.
Bill Reed: An internationally recognized proponent and practitioner in
sustainability and regeneration Bill is a principal in both the Integrative
Design Collaborative and Regenesis, Inc, - consulting organizations working
to lift green building and community planning into designs that are fully
integrated and evolving with living systems. His work centers on creating
the framework for and managing an integrative, whole-systems design process.
The objective: to improve the overall quality of the physical, social and
spiritual life of our living places and therefore the planet.
