*. . . and NYSAR3/Region 2 invite you to join a problem-solving forum to
discuss issues related to recycling, environmentally preferable products,
and other environmental issues.*

*Raindrops Falling on the Roof *
*It may appear that we are going pretty far afield for meeting topics in
March, but if you join us for this pair of interesting and enlightening
presentations, I’m sure you’ll see the connection immediately. First, Dr.
Paul Mankiewicz, Executive Director of the Gaia Institute, will tell us
about his innovative “waste-into-resources” philosophy and storm water
management techniques that include green roofs made with a patented
ultra-lightweight soil consisting of recycled expanded polystyrene, compost
and clay. Our second speaker will be Kate Zidar, Director of Habana Works
in Brooklyn and a long-time member of the Water Resources Group, which,
under the direction of the Council on the Environment of NYC, has been
responsible for installing almost 40 rainwater harvesting systems throughout
the City. Rainwater harvesting is perhaps the most ancient form of
recycling and not only helps keep a significant amount of storm water out of
our combined sewer system, but also provides a sustainable source of water
for the City’s community gardens.*
