Overlooked Assets: Sustainable Urban Yards
(2.5 CEUs--ASLA Continuing Ed Credits offered)

Do you live in a building that has a front, side or back area that is concrete, neglected or just plain ugly? Whether you live in a rowhouse or apartment building, there is probably a nearby space that can be transformed into an urban mini-oasis.

This day-long seminar featuring noted landscape and environmental professionals will inspire you to reclaim overlooked City "yards" hidden behind rowhouses and apartment buildings to enhance quality of life and maximize the environmental benefits conveyed by these spaces.

Establishing a scientific foundation for reclaiming the almost 53,000 acres of residential yard space in New York City, speakers will outline how to green urban yards to clean air, lower ambient temperature, provide shelter for habitat and divert rainwater from our aging water treatment system. Case studies of rowhouse and apartment building small-scale landscape roof top and back yard designs will be presented to demonstrate how sustainable landscaping practices can be affordably implemented.

When: Friday, May 14, 2010, 10am-3:45pm
