Hello all
Please forgive the additional update to this job posting. There are now 2
positions both are full-time consulting contracts based in Great Neck, NY
for $35 / hr. The foundation is mainly interested in MBAs and former
management consultants. Many thanks for your help in getting the word out.
Two Consultants Sought for Environmental Foundation:
Strategic Review Consultant (12 month) &
Research Consultant (6 month)
-------------------------------------
ABOUT THE EMPLOYER
The Open Space Institute is conducting a candidate search on behalf of an
affiliated philanthropic institution (Employer) who also works in the area
of land conservation. The Employer consists of two operating foundations
and three non-operating foundations largely focused on environmental issues,
with total assets in excess of $100M and a $5M annual budget. Over the past
10 years, the foundations have awarded $50M of grants to more than 50
beneficiaries. Beneficiaries include many of the leading domestic and
international environmental, arts and educational institutions, such as
Wildlife Conservation Society, The Nature Conservancy, New York Botanical
Garden, Metropolitan Museum of Art and Harvard University. Additional
information about the foundations will be provided to candidates who are
selected for interviews.
The Employer seeks to fill two consulting positions described separately
below (1) Strategic Review Consultant and (2) Research Consultant. Both
consultants will work among a staff of seven people who oversee the
financial, investment and administrative management of the foundations,
along with family office matters. There are no full-time grant employees at
this time. The work environment is very friendly but fast-paced and
demanding, reflecting an entrepreneurial spirit and rigorous corporate
culture. The Employer thus seeks hard-working and highly-motivated
candidates with strong business backgrounds, particularly in
strategic/management consulting. Both positions require candidates with
excellent academic records and with proven research, data collection,
analytical and report-writing experience. Please be prepared to forward
sample research/analytical report(s) you have written.
Both positions are full-time and based Monday to Friday in the Employers
new, spacious office in Great Neck, NY (30-min train ride from Penn
Station). To ensure that the consultants fully integrate and engage with
the team, the Employer requests that all work be conducted at the office (no
telecommuting option).
The Employer seeks mid-level professionals in terms of skills, compensation
and opportunity for career growth sought by the candidates. Candidates
should be entrepreneurial, flexible and high-energy self starters, willing
to commit the time and effort required to complete the assignments within an
aggressive, agreed-upon timeline.
The positions will be both stimulating and demanding. In return, the
Employer offers a truly unique opportunity to gain a broad yet up-close
exposure to the leading players in the environmental arena. Mid-level
professionals with early but good grounding in
environmental/foundation/business management will greatly expand their
professional networks in the environmental arena and gain depth of
experience in environmental grantmaking and program management.
------------------------------------
ACADEMIC & PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS for BOTH POSITIONS:
REQUIRED: A Master in Business Administration (MBA) degree. At least 4
years of work experience, some of which is in strategic/management
consulting or a demanding business analyst role.
ADDITIONAL: Environmental / foundation experience would be helpful but is
not required.
The typical candidate profile is an M.B.A. with 4 to 6 six years of work
experience in management consulting.
-----------------------------------
TO APPLY:
Please email (1) cover letter and (2) resume to Jude Wu at
consultantsearch2010 at gmail.com and specify the position you are applying for
in the subject line. It would be a plus to submit a writing sample
demonstrating your research and analytical skills as soon as possible.
Thank you.

POSITION 1: STRATEGIC REVIEW CONSULTANT
TERM: Consulting contract to last up to 12 months
COMPENSATION: $35/hr
DESCRIPTION: The Employer seeks a mid-level professional to conduct a
strategic review, analysis and planning exercise for all of its grantmaking
activities to date by all of its foundations. The overall strategic review
initiative for which the consultant is responsible includes the activities
leading up to, and the production of, the following three deliverables:
1. A report summarizing the foundations history of philanthropic
activities, including a comprehensive baseline documentation of grants made
to date, which may be published and distributed to interested parties.
(Months 1 to 4)
2. A confidential report to be shared with the foundations Trustees which
presents a critical evaluation of all grantmaking activities to date, with
respect to the effectiveness of individual grants as well as the grantmaking
program as a whole. (Months 5 to 8)
3. A long-term strategic plan produced in collaboration with the Founder
and the Trustees that will guide the foundations philanthropic mission and
grantmaking activities. (Months 9 to 12)

POSITION 2: RESEARCH CONSULTANT
TERM: Consulting contract to last up to 6 months
COMPENSATION: $35/hr
The Employer seeks a mid-level consultant to conduct industry research and
analysis associated with one of its operating foundations, which has a
program staff of 30 people. This operating foundation is dedicated to
bringing environmental education and outdoor fitness activities to
elementary and middle school students so as to increase their physical
well-being and to establish awareness, understanding, and appreciation of
the environment. Its environmental education program, primarily the
coordination of field trips to its 150+ acre biking, hiking and skiing
facility, has grown rapidly over 2 years to host more than 12,000
schoolchildren from 90 schools.
The research consultant is responsible for:
1. Conducting research, interviews and data collection of all similar
organizations in the United States (non-profit outdoor environmental
education and recreational organizations for schoolchildren), including
their mission, programs, visitation rates, and funding sources, among
others. (Month 1 and 2)
2. Compiling and analyzing the data collected into a report which describes
the non-profit outdoor environmental education sector, with charts and
visual aids as appropriate. (Month 3 and 4)
3. Writing a report of recommendation based on the findings above that will
help the operating foundation prepare a long-term strategic and program
plan.
