The Earth Institute is pleased to welcome Tanya Heikkila, associate professor at the School of Public Affairs, University of Colorado Denver, for a special presentation on An Approach for Analyzing Policy Processes: Case Study on Fracking. Join us on Monday, March 21, 2016, from 6:00pm - 7:00pm on Columbia University's Morningside campus, Low Library. Introductions will be given by Steven Cohen, executive director of the Earth Institute and a professor of practice at the School of International and Public Affairs. RSVP here.<http://www.earth.columbia.edu/events/view/82098>

In this talk, Heikkila will introduce an approach for looking at contentious policy processes by measuring the intensity, sources, and impacts of policy debates. The approach is illustrated through her research on hydraulic fracturing; she will discuss questionnaire data collected in the spring of 2015 from policy actors involved in hydraulic fracturing debates in Colorado. What factors influence these intense political debates? Why is there such marked polarization? Heikkila will explore these questions and more, and will look at the role of government, differing priorities, and shared knowledge in these debates. She will conclude with a research agenda for diagnosing contentious policy processes and helping inform policy processes toward sustainable politics.

This event is free and open to the public - we hope to see there.
