Two Programs on Climate Change and Strategies for Global Sustainability
Thursday, October 20th

Are we Capable of Adapting to Climate Change and Sea Level Rise?

Professor Klaus Jacob, Columbia University
Newman Vertical Campus, Room 14-245, 1:00-2:30 pm

Prof. Jacob studies disaster risk management, rising sea levels, climate change and disaster resilient mega-cities. He serves on the Mayor's New York City Panel on Climate Change (NPCC) and NY State's ClimAID project and has worked at Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory for over 40 years.

About the Program: Recent climate-science based forecasts seem to become ever more foreboding: Some NOAA scientists predict sea level rise (SLR) of as much as 9ft by 2050 - far beyond New York City Panel on Climate Change (2015) upper estimate of 30 inches (2.5 ft) by 2050. What would NYC's coastlines look like with 9ft of SLR? Are our current development, zoning, and land-use policies consistent with adapting to expected SLR? More questions than answers arise, but transformative changes are badly needed now.

This event is sponsored by the Provost's Faculty Research Seminar on Climate Change. Special thanks to Professors: Deborah Balk, Christopher Hallowell, Chester Zarnoch, Cynthia Thompson, Steven Young, Ivan Montiel, Mindy Engle-Friedman, and Kannan Mohan

Dispatches from the Gulf
Engelman Recital Hall (BPAC), 6:00-9:00 pm

About the Program: Six years after Deepwater Horizon oil spill, a global team works together to understand its environmental impact. Taking an interdisciplinary approach, the Journey to Planet Earth documentary series, draws connections between the sciences, politics, economics, sociology, and history. Join the Sustainability Taskforce for a screening and talk with Emmy-award winning documentarians Hal and Marilyn Weiner.
